The Nature Restoration Project
This transformative initiative aimed at not only enhancing the New Horizon School campus but also fostering a deeper connection between the community and the environment. This project sought to exemplify the importance of nature restoration, emphasizing its positive impact on education, community well-being, and the broader goals of environmental sustainability.

Partnerships and Funding:

In collaboration with our partners, the project received crucial support from various sources. Funding including contributions from the Metropolitan Water Company turf removal rebate, a generous grant from the Mrs. Meyer's Family, and the WAQF Endowment Fund. Additional support from the City of Pasadena, Audubon, Urban Homestead, and Outward Bound Adventures, played a pivotal role in making our vision a reality.

Community Involvement:

The heart of the Nature Restoration Project lay in the active involvement of our community. School families and local residents participated enthusiastically in workshops, demonstrating a shared commitment to environmental stewardship. Their hands-on contributions not only shaped the project physically but also forged lasting connections within the community.

Learning Naturalist's Role:

As the Learning Naturalist, my role extended from designing the landscape to fostering an understanding of sustainable practices through free community workshops. These sessions educated participants in regenerative landscaping techniques that would positively impact soil, air, and water quality, aligning with our broader goal of enhancing the health and well-being of our students and community.

Timeline and Progress:

From the initial allocation of funding in 2021 to careful planning throughout the following year, our journey culminated in breaking ground in the fall of 2022. Our first workshops involved removal of turf grass and invasive plants, followed by digging water infiltration features and building log berm structures. These first steps marked the path to realizing our regenerative landscape.

Environmental Restoration Team:

Integral to our success was the Environmental Restoration Team at Outward Bound Adventures. Comprising members from the Pasadena community facing various challenges, including incarceration and gang histories, the ERT played a vital role in the project's execution. Their dedication, from turf removal to swale building and log placement to the final planting, exemplified the transformative power of engaging marginalized communities in conservation work.

Outcomes and Impact:

Today the Nature Restoration Project flourishes as a testament to the collective efforts of school families and community members. The impact extends beyond aesthetics, contributing to improved air quality, local biodiversity, and a sense of pride within our community. Testimonials from those involved underscore the profound influence of the project on both the environment and the lives of those who contributed.

Conclusion:

As we celebrate the success of the Nature Restoration Project, we express gratitude to our partners, contributors, and the dedicated community members who made this endeavor possible. Looking ahead, we envision a continued commitment to urban landscape restoration, hoping that our efforts inspire others. May this regenerated landscape be a lasting legacy, benefiting generations of wildlife and community members alike.
